Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) Scheme was launched by Government of India to make the education system more responsive to the needs of marginalised girls and to enhance their access and retention. Under the scheme, residential schools for girls at upper primary to Sr. Secondary levels were set up in the Educationally Backward Block (EBB)s, towns areas all over the country. The scheme provides education for girls in the age group of 10-18 years belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Minority communities and children of families of Below Poverty Line (BPL).
Thus, the Scheme now provides for access and quality education to girls from disadvantaged groups of girls in the age group of 10-18 years aspiring to study in Classes VI to XII; belonging to SC, ST, OBC, Minority communities and BPL families to ensure smooth transition of girls from elementary to secondary and upto class XII wherever possible. KGBV provides the facility to have at-least one residential school for girls from Classes VI-XII in every educationally backward block (EBBs).
